A Tribute to the Producers

A potpourri of locally-sourced cuisine, a picturesque sunset on the Ashley River, and a community of food system leaders gathered round the table made our 2016 Tribute Dinner a CHSWFF celebration to remember. On the evening of Wednesday November 17, we had the pleasure of honoring the growers + purveyors who provide our city’s world renowned culinary industry with locally-grown produce, farm-raised meat, and freshly caught seafood. The family-style supper began with a cocktail hour with libations by 492’s Megan Deschaine + The Ordinary’s Lane Becker. The starters featured local spirits provided by High Wire Distilling and Virgil Kaine Lowcountry Whiskey, as well as impeccable passed bites prepared by local chef heroes, Mike Lata + Sean Brock. Cocktail hour was followed by a three-course meal prepared by a team of Charleston’s most celebrated chefs, including Kevin Johnson, The Grocery + Robert Stehling, Hominy Grill + Jacques Larson, The Obstinate Daughter + Chris Steward, The Glass Onion + Jeremiah Bacon, The MacIntosh + Frank Lee. Grassroots provided a bevy of incredible wines that paired with the dinner. As if the abundance of food, live music and passionate conversations were not enough, the stunning event space at Lowndes Grove Plantation made for a picture-perfect celebration. Throughout  the evening, guests’ conversations echoed among the live oaks. Several guests shared their pleasure in having the chance to mingle with friends + fellow producers. Honoree Celeste Albers, of Green Grocer, shared, “The best part is that all of the local producers are able to get together.”   Above all, our 2016 Tribute Dinner gave us the opportunity to celebrate and honor Charleston’s industrious producers, for they are the true stars of the city’s explosive culinary scene. It’s our pleasure to share the honorees of A Tribute to the Producers: Mark + Kerry Marhefka of Abundant Seafood Glenn Roberts of Anson Mills Pete + Babs Ambrose of Ambrose Farm Sara Clow of GrowFood Carolina Celeste + George Albers of Green Grocer Annie + Marc Filion of Keegan-Filion Farm Jack + Andrea Limehouse of Limehouse Produce Not only was the Tribute Dinner an opportunity for our local producers to gather under one tent, it was also a chance to give back to our local community. In tribute to the evening’s honorees, a gift of $10,000 was given to Lowcountry Local First’s Growing New Farmers Program. The donation will fund new farmer scholarships which will reduce the cost of the program for participants. To learn more about Growing New Farmers, watch this film about program graduate Stephen Wilson that debuted at the dinner.
