Charleston Wine + Food

Celebrating an illustrious 50-year legacy, Landmark Vineyards stands as a testament to the visionary spirit of its founder, Damaris Deere Ford. In 1974, after acquiring the foundation of what would evolve into a renowned winery, Damaris, great-granddaughter of John Deere embarked on a journey that would redefine the viticultural landscape of Sonoma. While her initial aspirations centered around crafting exceptional wines, the unforeseen ascent of Landmark to the pinnacle of premium wineries in the region surpassed all expectations.

Landmark’s narrative began to unfold between 1974 and 1989 in Windsor, California.  However, captivated by the panoramic vistas of the Mayacamas Mountains, Damaris orchestrated a pivotal move to Sonoma County, establishing the iconic Kenwood Estate. The turning point came in 1993 when Damaris enlisted the expertise of the globally acclaimed enologist, Helen Turley. This collaboration birthed Landmark’s signature style of award-winning Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, characterized by whole-cluster-pressed grapes, fermentation by native yeast strains, and maturation in French oak barrels.

The partnership was considered a success with Wine Spectator including the 1995 Overlook Chardonnay in its prestigious Top 100 list, a recognition that has since been given eight more times.  Landmark has consistently exemplified excellence in winemaking, accumulating over 250 scores of 90+ points. . Most recently, Landmark’s Escolle Road Pinot Noir scored 93 points from Wine Enthusiast and the Grand Detour Pinot Noir scored 92 points from Wine Spectator. The unwavering support and loyalty of the Wine Society Members have been instrumental in Landmark’s success and, as the winery marks its 50th year, a heartfelt expression of gratitude is extended to them.

Amidst the celebration of Landmark’s golden jubilee, the legacy of its visionary founder, Damaris Deere Ford, takes center stage. An entrepreneur, socialite, and philanthropist, Damaris lived a life as vibrant as the wines she cultivated. On May 16, 2023, at 96, Damaris passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of outstanding winemaking.

As we raise our glasses to toast Landmark’s 50 years, we raise them higher in a poignant tribute to Damaris Deere Ford. Entrepreneur, philanthropist, and matriarch, her indomitable spirit continues to inspire and guide the ongoing success of Landmark Vineyards. To learn more about Landmark Vineyards, please visit LandmarkWine.com.
