Chef Doug Watson is a new to the Charleston culinary scene. Watson moved to the Lowcountry in November 2023 to join the 5th Street Group as Executive Chef at Church and Union Charleston.

Born and raised in Buffalo, NY – Watson moved to Charlotte, NC to further his culinary career by attending Johnson and Wales University. During his time in Charlotte, Watson worked full time throughout culinary school, landing him a Junior Sous chef position upon graduating at James Beard Award winning restaurant, Roosters. After graduation, Chef Doug competed in the prestigious Ment’or Young Chef competition, where he came in 3rd place.

Chef Doug later spent 6 years exploring the culinary scene in Baltimore, MD. While in Baltimore, Watson spent time at James Bear Award Winning restaurant, Foreman Wolf, in addition to working with Chef Julian Marucci at Cinghiale. Watson then began to further his management career in the culinary industry, working as Corporate Executive Chef in Baltimore area restaurant groups.

Additionally, Chef Doug spent time in Dallas, Texas, working full time as Executive Chef for the Dallas Cowboys. After his time with the NFL, he lived in Atlanta, GA before moving to Charleston, SC this past November.

With his experience and culinary background, Chef Doug describes his kitchen style as “rooted in French technique with influence of rustic presentation.”

Outside of the kitchen, you can find Chef Doug spending time with his golden doodle and road tripping with his fiancé around the southeastern coast. Watson is excited to be a part of the 5th Street Group family and is eager to share his love for cooking and his culinary style with the Charleston community.
