A New York Times bestselling Author and James Beard Award Nominee, she was featured on CBS Mornings (The Dish), National Public Radio, WCBD Channel 2 News, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlanta Journal, Martha Stewart Magazine, Garden & Gun Magazine and numerous podcasts. Ms. Emily was also the recipient of the Presidential Volunteer Service award for her community service, and July 22, 2022 was proclaimed “Emily Meggetts” Day in the City of Charleston.
Mrs. Emily Meggett, affectionately known as “the Matriarch of Edisto Island, South Carolina,” was a revered figure whose life and contributions embodied the rich cultural heritage and culinary traditions of the Lowcountry. Born and raised on Edisto Island, Mrs. Meggett spent her life preserving and passing down the Gullah Geechee culinary traditions, a unique cultural heritage that traces its roots back to West African enslaved people brought to the United States’ southeastern coastline.

Her children are continuing to carry the torch of her great legacy as a reminder that culinary traditions are vital threads in the fabric of our cultural identity. They want to ensure that the rich flavors and stories of the Gullah Geechee people will continue to be celebrated and cherished for generations to come through their mother’s legacy.
