2022-2023

April Dove, of Goose Creek, SC, is the Founder/Brewer of Tha CommUNITY. Before becoming a Certified Homebrewer and graduate of the American Brewers Guild in Middlebury, Vermont, she spent her spare time exploring new breweries. In 2012, she visited Stuggart, Germany and tried her first German beer which sparked an even greater interest in the craft beer industry. In 2018, she then traveled to Portland and visited 13 breweries within three days—to later introduce herself to the local brew community as the Traveling Hoptista. In this role, she hosts beer flight tasting events, vlogs, and visit breweries statewide during her off-time as a traveling nurse. For April, the Traveling Hoptista, is also an educational tool to teach people about craft beer . In 2021, she started a multi-brew initiative to offer a more diverse and inclusive taproom experience throughout the tri-county. These efforts led her to release an American Lager (Tha CommUNITY) in partnership with Holy City Brewing and become the first Black woman to do so. Her career highlights not only include brewing a flavorful and inclusive beer, but for the City of North Charleston to recognize October 1st annually as Tha CommUNITY Day. April loves what she does and hopes to diversify the palate of her community “one beer at a time.”
