Kathleen Purvis
Kathleen Purvis has been a journalist since 1978 and a food editor, writer and columnist with the Charlotte Observer since 1989. Her previous newspapers include the Delray Beach (Fla.) News Journal, the Palm Beach Daily News and the Tallahassee Democrat. She attended Florida State University. She is a member and past officer of the Association of Food Journalists, a member of the Southern Foodways Alliance, and a member of the James Beard Foundation, where she currently serves as chair of the JBF Leadership Awards, recognizing action in the areas of sustainability and food policy. She has been a commentator on “The Splendid Table” on Public Radio International and a speaker at the Greenbrier Symposium for Professional Food Writers, the Southern Foodways Symposium and the International Association of Culinary Professionals. She is a winner of the Missouri Lifestyle Journalism Award in addition to awards from the Association of Food Journalists and the N.C. Press Association. She was one of five regional newspaper food editors cited by Saveur for the magazine’s annual “Top 100” issue in 2008. “Pecans: A Savor the South Cookbook” is her first book; a second entry in the collection, “Bourbon: A Savor the South Cookbook,” will be released in fall 2013.
